Column Scanning Using Gamma Scan

Non-Intrusive Diagnostic Solution for Process Optimisation

Overview

Scansolution® supported oil & gas operators across Asia providing Column Scanning to evaluates the internal condition and performance of distillation and process columns while they remain in operation. By analysing density variations along the column, Gamma Scan helps identify flooding, foaming, maldistribution, tray damage, or fouling without shutdown, enabling operators to troubleshoot issues, optimise separation efficiency, and plan maintenance with minimal production impact.

Column Scanning Using Gamma Scan

Non-Intrusive Diagnostic Solution for Process Optimisation

How Gamma Scan Works

A shielded gamma source and detector move together along the outside of the column. As gamma rays pass through the vessel, their intensity changes with internal density. The resulting data is processed into a density profile an X-ray of the column in operation highlighting liquid holdup, vapour maldistribution, fouling, or tray damage.

Key Benefits

  • Non-intrusive & online: Performed with the unit on-stream; no shutdown required.
  • Accurate diagnosis: Detects flooding, foaming, maldistribution, fouling and mechanical issues.
  • Optimised operation: Supports troubleshooting, performance evaluation and turnaround planning.
  • Cost-effective: Reduces downtime and avoids unnecessary internal replacement.
  • Versatile: Works on tray and packed columns in refineries, petrochemical and gas processing.

Applications

Distillation & Fractionation Absorbers & Strippers Scrubbers & Solvent Systems
Evaluate tray performance, liquid distribution and identify hydraulic restrictions. Assess gas-liquid contact efficiency and diagnose flooding or foaming. Troubleshoot maldistribution, fouling and bypassing under actual operating conditions.

FAQs: Gamma Scan Column Scanning

Do we need to shut down the unit?

No. Gamma Scan is performed while the column is online, avoiding production loss.

Flooding, foaming, maldistribution, fouling, tray damage and vapour/liquid bypassing.
Duration depends on column height and access; most industrial scans are completed within the same working day.
