Sour Water Stripper Case Study

Overview

Scansolution supported a refinery operator located in Southeast Asia by conducting a series of gamma column scans on a Sour Water Stripper Column. The objective was to assess internal integrity and process performance without shutting down the unit.

Scansolution Diagnostic Approach

Multiple gamma scans were performed between 2 months at different operating rates. The scans evaluated tray condition, liquid holdup, flooding behavior, and bottom liquid levels.

Key Findings

At higher rates, trays were intact with stable liquid holdup and no flooding. Mild entrainment was observed at selected trays. At reduced rates, flooding was detected at the top trays with severe entrainment in mid-sections, while lower trays remained intact.

Comparative Insights

The scans confirmed that flooding was process-related rather than due to mechanical failure, allowing operators to adjust operating strategies confidently.

Recommendations

Rescan at lower rates, conduct targeted thermal neutron scans if flooding persists, and monitor density changes at critical trays during rate adjustments.
